Running the Race: Growing disciples as church together
Paul's Letters to Timothy and Titus
The importance of these letters for us today:

Life is a bit like running a race. We have a starting point and a goal, and each step either leads us towards our goal or away from it. As disciples of Jesus we are in a race where the finishing line is to be with Christ forever, in complete peace and joy. The key in this race is about running faithfully in the right direction, getting stronger in Jesus as we go rather than weaker. And we don’t run this race alone – we run it alongside other believers, helping each other to be more sure about our faith in Jesus and growing together. Therefore, it’s important that we understand God’s purposes for the church, and life together – our personal transformation is linked to the health of the church, which is God’s vehicle for Gospel growth.

Paul’s letters to Timothy and Titus are written to churches who are in that race – at the end of his final letter before his death, he says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). And his desire through these letters is that his hearers would run the Christian race together, keeping their faith in Jesus as their fuel.

The issues addressed in these letters are very relevant to the church in our day. Underpinning the letters is the priority of guarding the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, and how this influences our:

  • Godly living

  • Discipling & investing in the next generation

  • Caring for the vulnerable

  • Suffering for Christ

  • Loyalty to each other

  • and Persevering in our faith to the end!

God has some exciting and challenging things to say and do in our lives through this series, as we seek to grow as followers of Jesus together at PBC. Let’s run this race together in truth and love!
