“Secrets of the Kingdom”

Jesus’ parables of the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew’s Gospel

“Can I tell you a secret?”

It’s an intriguing question isn’t it? Someone is offering to disclose something to you that not everyone knows. Maybe you’re honoured to be given ‘inside knowledge’. There might be something very valuable about what you’re about to hear. But then again, having this information might also give you a responsibility, to look after that knowledge carefully, but also to respond by doing something with it that will affect your life.

Jesus was a great storyteller. But his stories were not for entertainment – they were important messages about God, life and purpose, and revealing his identity. Many of these stories, known as parables, talked about what the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ is and how people could be part of the most incredible movement in this life and the next.

Jesus knew that there would be varying responses to these parables – some people would listen but just not get it or not want embrace the truth contained in them; whilst others would respond in faith and receive all the benefits of entering the Kingdom. To these people, Jesus said: “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you.” (Matthew 13:11)

Jesus has the most incredible message to share with us. His parables portray the Kingdom of Heaven using vivid imagery.
